Mr. Tarbell is a Director in Houlihan Lokey’s Financial and Valuation Advisory business. He has more than three decades of experience providing valuation and financial opinions to private and publicly traded companies. Mr. Tarbell has worked on more than 1,000 engagements over the course of his career.
Mr. Tarbell co-leads the firm’s Dispute Resolution Consulting practice, is Head of the firm’s Estate and Gift Tax Valuation practice, Co-Head of the firm’s Employee Stock Ownership Plan Valuation practice, and a member of the firm’s Technical Standards Committee.
Before joining Houlihan Lokey, Mr. Tarbell was the Director of Financial Advisory Services for a national valuation firm. Earlier, he was a Vice President in the M&A group of a boutique investment banking firm.
Mr. Tarbell speaks frequently on securities valuation, capital markets, and other financial issues. He develops and teaches valuation content for organizations, including the American Society of Appraisers, the International Institute of Business Valuers, undergraduate- and graduate-level university courses, Big Four accounting firms, and leading law firms. He has served as a reviewer, editor, contributing author, and/or technical advisor for several valuation textbooks and publications, including Valuing a Business: The Analysis and Appraisal of Closely Held Companies and The Lawyer’s Business Valuation Handbook: Understanding Financial Statements, Appraisal Reports, and Expert Testimony.
Mr. Tarbell is a member of the Editorial Review Board of Business Valuation Review and the Editorial Advisory Board of Business Valuation Update. He has testified in various legal forums, including state and federal courts, the U.S. Tax Court, U.S. Department of Labor hearings, and a U.S. Congressional hearing, as well as in arbitration, mediation, and deposition proceedings. Mr. Tarbell frequently serves as a consultant to lawyers during litigation and dispute resolution.
Mr. Tarbell holds a B.S. from the University of Oregon and an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He is a member of the College of Fellows of the American Society of Appraisers, certified in Business Valuation and Appraisal Review and Management. Mr. Tarbell is a member of the organization’s Board of Governors and a former member and Chairperson of its Business Valuation Committee. He is a CFA charterholder, granted by the CFA Institute, and an AQB Certified USPAP Instructor. Mr. Tarbell is also a member of the Legal and Regulatory Advisory Committee, a member and former Chair of the Valuation Advisory Committee, a former member of the Public Policy Council, the former Chair of the Advisory Committees Chairs Council, and a former member of the board of directors of The ESOP Association, a member of the Portland Society of Financial Analysts, and an associate member of the American Bar Association.
